The magnificent and historic Weaste Cemetery in  Salford , Greater Manchester, is now available to view on  www.deceasedonline.com . We are delighted to share the latest addition to our Salford Collection with the burial records from Weaste Cemetery , one of the very first municipal Victorian cemeteries. Salford Corporation opened the cemetery in 1857 as it became clear that the parish churchyards were struggling for space to bury people. Agecroft Cemetery, Salford

This week, I focus on one of the cemeteries featured in our  new collection from the historic industrial city of Salford (now in Greater Manchester) Above: The Victorian mortuary chapel clocktower at Agecroft Cemetery Agecroft Cemetery and Crematorium is situated in the Pendlebury area of Salford. Opened in 1903 in response to overcrowding at nearby Weaste Cemetery, Agecroft covers 45 acres. The cemetery originally had three chapels, Church of England, Roman Catholic, and nonconformist. The Catholic chapel was pulled down, and in 1957, the former nonconformist chapel building was converted  into a crematorium . On the left is a photograph of the disused Victorian mortuary chapel clocktower. This has been listed by the Victorian Society. I will be exploring Salford in the Second World War in detail next week. However, visitors to Agecroft should look out for the stone memorial to the seven-man crew of Lancaster bomber PB304. The aeroplane crashed in Regatta Stree...

Salford City Council Collection

Deceased Online this week launches a new collection from the historic industrial city of Salford  Agecroft Cemetery, Salford Salford is renowned as one of the world's first industrial cities. Its proud industrial history includes pioneering social support for workers, including the introduction of the world's first free public library. As a settlement, Salford dates back to the Neolithic Age, and Ordsall Hall , a haunted Tudor house is evidence of its existence as a village on the River Irwell. By the 18th century, Salford had a small population. However, this was soon to change with the Industrial Revolution. By 1801, the area was home to  29,495 individuals, many of whom worked in the expanding cotton and silk factories or on the docks of the Manchester Ship Canal . A hundred years later in 1901, thanks to the local textile industry, this had grown to  296,210.  Sadly the early 20th century saw a decline in Salford's industry as a result of overseas compe...
