New Year and New Releases

Deceased Online looks forward to an exciting 2013

Happy New Year to all readers of this blog! 2012 saw a huge increase in burial records on the Deceased Online database and this year we are looking forward to even more.

London is very well-represented on the site. Last year we added data from the boroughs of Newham, Harrow, and Greenwich to join the collections of cemetery and crematoria records of Brent, Merton, Havering, Islington and Camden. Famous names from among these collections include Horatia Nelson in Harrow, Bertie Mee in Islington, and Richmal Crompton in Greenwich.

Scottish records now include full burial records and headstone collections from Angus, Aberdeenshire, Edinburgh, the Highlands, Inverness, Banffshire, Dundee City, Ayshire, Stirling, Morayshire, Borders, Argyll, Clackmannanshire, Fife, Perthshire, Lothian, Lanarkshire, and the Isle of Islay. By the end of 2013, we hope to have up to 2 million Scottish burial records online.

Having grown up in North West England, I was pleased to see data from the councils of Cheshire West and Chester, and Bolton added in 2012. Among the many notable names in these records are members of the Warburton family, famous for their bread-making.

Other highlights from last year were the additions of the records of Cotswold District Council’s cemeteries in Gloucestershire, Eltham Crematorium which includes data from the London boroughs of Bexley and Greenwich, and those of Dartford Borough Council in Kent

In 2013, we are looking to double the existing database with the addition of burial and cremation records from across the UK.

The release of all 150,00 records from Overdale Crematorium in Bolton should be completed this month. After this, one of the next collections to go online will be from Trafford (Altrincham) in Greater Manchester. Hopefully, these will be joined by two more major North West authorities by early autumn.

We are all looking forward to meeting readers and database users at Who Do You Think You Are? Live in February, but before then we'll be adding a number of memorial inscriptions and photos from the Bolton section of the Lancashire & Manchester Family History Society (LMFHS). We're planning to work with many more FHSs and Friends' groups over the next twelve months; most FHSs can see that our service complements their efforts and we're certainly not in any competition with them.

After this will be the release of the first of a series of major collections from London: Manor Park Cemetery & Crematorium in Forest Gate E7. Next up will be the launch of the first of the Victorian Magnificent Seven cemeteries to be fully digitised: Brompton Cemetery in the Royal Borough of Kensington and Chelsea. These are two of the largest cemeteries in London, and their records include hundreds of distinguished, famous and infamous people.

Other areas still in the digitisation phase are the North East, Yorkshire, the West and East Midlands, East Anglia, Wales, and the South West.

On top of all this, we will also be offering new services through the website for further customer support, and launching two competitions for users of the database to win some superb history books.

Phew! It’s going to be a great year . . .

New Maps Online for St Peter's Cemetery and Churchyard

New data for Scotland will be appearing on Deceased Online over the next couple of weeks. Here we give you an insight into our holdings on the cemeteries of Aberdeen.
