As records for the Church (Rock) Cemetery and Basford Cemetery in Nottingham are uploaded to the Deceased Online website this week, I give a preview of the Basford data.
Following on from the opening of Nottingham's Church Cemetery in 1856, the first burial took place at Basford Cemetery in 1875.
The old parish of Basford lay 1½-3 miles north of Nottingham. In the latter half of the 19th century it was a major centre for framework knitting. The new cemetery was situated in Nottingham Road in what is now New Basford. It is smaller than the Rock Cemetery, originally covering an area of just six acres and containing two mortuary chapels.
Basford's burial registers are very detailed and include:-
The cemetery also holds at least 44 war dead from the 1914-18 and three burials from the Second World War. Nottingham and environs were attacked heavily in the Blitz. 159
people were killed in just two hours on the night of 8-9 May 1941. Notable local residents buried there include Chemical Works Manager, Henry Finn, and Coal Merchant, George Cox Stretton.
In nearby Newark, local residents will be marking the anniversary of the air raid of 6-7 March 1941. The Friends of Newark Cemetery's events on March 6th and 7th this year commemorate the 41 victims of the Ransome
and Marles Luftwaffe bombing of 1941. Some 30 of the 41
victims are buried in Newark Cemetery and the Friends group has
organised tours and other activities. Full details can be seen at: http://friendsofnewarkcemeteryuk.weebly.com/.
All Newark Cemetery's records are available on Deceased Online and you
can see details of all 41 victims on this excellent website, http://www.coddington.org.uk/…/20…/176-ransome-a-marles-dead.

DeleteHi Steven
ReplyDeleteGlad to hear you have found your ancestors' burial records. Have you visited the cemetery? The staff there may be able to help with evidence (or not) of any headstone.
Does your great great grandfather have an official war grave?
Emma.
Hi Emma, My name is Harold Shipston I'm from Queensland Australia and have been searching for my great Grandfather John Shipston. This week I have found he is buried in Basford Cemetery. We now know John was buried 30Sept 1913 in Basford Cemetery Grave site REF : N6 / 36 . This information has been the result of nearly two years of searching through what information I could get here in Australia about our heritage. His wife is buried here in a state called Victoria. I am unsure if John was buried in a family plot or alone. My Question is, Do you, or do you know of anyone that could take a pic of his grave to send to us for our history. I am willing to cover any costs and expenses or what ever the normal fee may be over there.
ReplyDeleteThank you so much in advance. (email address supplied)
Kind Regards Harold.

Hi Harold,
DeleteThank you for your message. I am delighted your have found the burial record of your great grandfather.
If you look on the Deceased Online website on John's entry, you will see that there is an option for "interment details". This lists 6 names, including a Rhoda Shipston, who may be related.
I am not based near Basford but you could contact the cemetery directly or ask a local genealogist or member of a local history group if they would take a photo for you. A professional genealogist is likely to charge for this service.
Hopefully, this way you will finally be able to see where your great grandfather lies buried.
Good luck!
Emma.
Hi Harold, I might be able to help you as I visit the cemetery every week looking after the war graves.
DeleteI have a plan of the cemetery and if he has a headstone I can take a picture for you. I have emailed you.
Andy.
Contact with Harold made via email. I found the plot location but unfortunately his Grandfather is in an unmarked grave.
DeleteThanks, Andy!
DeleteHi, I believe my great, great grandparents are buried in Basford Cemetery, Sophia and William Newton. Sophia, born 1848, died 14 October 1911, and William, unfortunately no birth or death details that I can find... I wondered if you have any information on where their graves are located, or whether any other relatives with the name Newton are buried there. Many thanks, Elizabeth
ReplyDeleteHi Elizabeth, have you searched for Sophia and William in the Deceased Online database?
ReplyDeleteEmma.
A fine site. Congratulations. I am just working on my maternal grandmother's family, the Fearns. I know several were buried in Basford. For example William and Phoebe, Henry and Mary, Feargus and Mary. Is there a search function for me to find them? Many thanks.
ReplyDeleteHi Laurence,
DeleteThank you for your kind comments. Have you searched on the Deceased Online website at www.deceasedonline.com? You can use the Advanced Search option.
Put "Fearn" in the "last name" box.
In the "country" section - click "United Kingdom".
In "region" - click "East Midlands".
In "county" - click "Nottinghamshire".
Then click "all locations" to open up the tab.
