This week, I am taking a closer look at the recently uploaded photography collection of Norfolk cemeteries taken by Norfolk resident, Louise Cocker.
Deceased Online's latest addition to the database has proved popular with family historians over the past couple of weeks. Louise Crocker's amazing collection of hundreds of cemetery photographs from across Norfolk is an essential resource for anyone with ancestors from these parishes.
As the image above demonstrates, Norfolk is a beautiful English county, famed for its extraordinary Broads, as well as its flat landscape, Norman churches, and historic stately homes. Bordering Lincolnshire, Cambridgeshire and Suffolk, this East Anglian county was one of the most highly populated and prosperous parts of England in the Middle Ages. Since the 17th century, its population and industry have declined, leaving a largely rural economy. During the First and Second World Wars, the county became home to several air bases and, sadly, its cemeteries became lasting homes to many airmen.
The photograph above shows the headstone of Vaclav Brejcha, a Czech Sergeant in the Royal Air Force. His grave lies in RAF Coltishall Cemetery, 10 miles North-North-East of Norfolk's county town, Norwich. On the Deceased Online website, you can zoom into the image to see the inscription more clearly.
Searching the Collection
Find the collection in the database under the title, "Norfolk Cemeteries Photographs".
The screengrab below shows how to complete the form:
- click on "United Kingdom" in the "country" drop-down box
- click on "East of England" in the "region" box
- click on "Norfolk" in the "county" box
Due to the nature of this collection, some records may be difficult to find. Where headstones have weathered and eroded over time, some parts of the memorial text may be rendered illegible. Try searching with a percentage symbol (%) in place of a surname or forename. This will bring up all names, including those recorded as illegible.
Example - Searching for "White, Sophie Anna" - no records found.
"%, Sophie Anna" will display all records with the forename Sophie Anna.
"White, %" will display all records with the surname White.
"White, Sophie %" will display all Sophie Whites, with any middle name.
To focus the search, use the date of death (or a date period, such as 1939-1945) in the burial date field.
Should you have multiple relations in the same churchyard or cemetery, it may be more cost-effective for you to purchase the entire collection of photographs for that churchyard or cemetery, rather than purchasing individual photographs.
More photographs from this collection will be added soon. The list of those cemeteries with images currently in the database is as follows:
